What makes people revert to such archane language? Street-wise traders with a shrewd take on modern life can't seem to stop themselves reverting to a phrase from the Victorian era when it comes to sticking a notice on a shop window.
What's wrong with 'ask here'?

How about 'alight here' when travelling on the train?! Even the poor souls on the Munich network have to be familiar with this arcane, unfathomable verb when they hear the english announcer giving Rosenheimerplatz as the next stop(my guess it's an unsuspecting german who doesn't know any better). o tempora, o mores, o europa!
